I think the one thing this book made me realise is that when I hear about these situations on the news I have my own boundaries in place which somehow stop me thinking too deeply about the excruciating pain for everyone involved...that might be self-preservation too and because I need those boundaries in the day job, but a book like this allows you to think about it safely, from a slight distance and really understand. The mother's pain is just heart-breaking.
I've had a lovely e mail from Nicola at Persephone explaining that they chose the endpapers in order not to distract from the book in the way that patchwork might have done, I should have guessed that...they never get it wrong:-)
Chris I've just taken possession of the book Kevin recommended on Maxwell, a compilation of essay tributes edited by Charles Baxter, it really is worth getting hold of, some fabulous writing from people who met and knew him. I'm almost due my next read, I'm tempted to stray off piste with The Chateau through the summer and save The Folding Leaf for the autumn, have a lovely holiday everyone who's off on one and come back and tell us about the reading:-)
